The SSOBB

"Barns have this wonderful way of connecting us to our homes, our history, and our heritage."
(from a conversation with Becky, a New Hampshire quilt shop owner - shared here with permission)

The Secret Society of Barn Builders was established in late December 2014
by fifteen women from across the U.S., Canada, and Germany --
some with extensive free piecing experience
and others new to the technique --
who agreed to “test” the process notes for Build-a-Barn
by creating their own original free pieced barns.

My challenge to each of them was simple:

"Create a free pieced barn that reflects the area where you live
using the book's process note drafts for reference,
fabrics already in your stash,
and your own design sensibilities and skill sets."

For the next five months,
emails flew as we exchanged progress photos,
resolved dilemmas, shared stories about our barns,
deliberated over edits, considered possible
backing and binding fabric options,
and developed new long distance friendships.

It was a very exciting experience for all of us.
and we all have so many stories to share.

There is so much to look forward to!

It seems like SUCH a long time ago
that the incredible quilts showcased
in the BUILD-A-BARN SSOBB Gallery
were flimsies and backs on hangers
just waiting to be quilted . . .
