Cathy writes:
I am not really a free piecer,
so I read through the Summer barn’s process notes
at least ten times before cutting into any fabric!
I used the barn in back of our house for inspiration.
Pigs are one of the things Iowa is known for
and we did raise one pig in our barn.
We also raised chickens for many years.
My daughter and son-in-law are certified in Iowa
as mushroom-foragers so there are mushrooms in the foreground
and there are cats that now live in the barn.
Our barn has a lean-to attached
and where it joins the barn,
there is a walk-through out to
the pastures, gardens, orchards, and fields.

DESIGN NOTE:
Cathy effectively personalized her first free pieced work
using novelty fabrics cleverly cut and positioned.
QUILTING NOTE:
The quilting of multiple textures adds interest and definition
without overpowering Cathy’s story-driven fabric choices.
